Source: Al Jazeera

  1. Summary
On Saturday a 33-year-old man shot and killed eight people at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas. At least two of those killed were children. Seven others were wounded. The shooter was killed by a police officer on the scene. Police found an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun at the scene, and authorities said the shooter was wearing body armor.

Law enforcement said the shooter had been staying at a nearby motel before the shooting. He appeared to have worked as a security guard from 2016 to 2020 and had firearms training in relation to that. His social media history reportedly indicated an interest in white supremacy, and during the shooting, he was wearing a patch that read "RWDS," an acronym for "Right Wing Death Squad."

Authorities cautioned the investigation is still in its early stages, and few details have been publicly released. The motive for the attack remains unclear. The incident is the 21st such mass shooting this year (defined as four or more casualties), a record pace.

Should minors under the age of 16 be allowed to work 6 hours a day?

423 votes, 50 comments

Context: Iowa legislature passes bill relaxing child labor laws.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - How come we all agree that social media is bad for young teens, but some think working in a meatpacking plant for 6 hours is fine? Low-income teens are going to be sidetracked from school early on by the incentive of making money for themselves/their families right away. Businesses get a lower-wage and easily-exploited workforce, which will impact the wages of adult workers. No one's saying kids can't work to earn side money. But part of why our country achieved a high standard of living is we moved kids away from factories and into a universal education system.

Yes - Despite popular belief, there are still some kids out there today that actually want to work, and if they desire or choose to work up to 6 hours a day they should be...
