Trevor McKendrick - Get lost

It’s always darkest just before they turn on the light.

Lost in Translation (movie)

Watched it for the first time ever over the weekend. I really liked it, and was just what I needed late on a Saturday night to get out of my own head.

Most movie reviews are truly terrible – this Lost in Translation review by Roger Ebert might be the exception that proves the rule. I read it right after finishing the movie & it described what I felt watching way better than I could. It’s genuinely good writing, but especially for a movie review.

And if you like Bill Murray, you should watch The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons from a Mythical Man. It’s about all the random surprise appearances that Bill does… he’s showed up to weddings, random bar nights, house parties, flag football games… it’s wonderful & uplifting. Check the trailer on YouTube here.

Sudowrite (online writing tool)

I haven’t used this yet but I’ve heard very good things and it looks useful.

Basically, describe what you want a first draft of and it will spit something out for you. Use it as a way to end writer’s block (forever?)

Who Regulates the Regulators? (article)

Progress Studies have come a long way in terms of becoming recognized by a larger number of humans, especially when those humans are in powerful institutions.

I always kind of wondered: what’s the point of all these people & places that just put out articles & ideas as their output?

Progress Studies has become a strong example to me of the power of ideas. If you put great ideas out into the world persuasively, people will begin to adopt them.

It’s also yet another example of the importance of branding, or concept handles, or whatever you want to call giving something a name so that people can encapsulate a complex thing into a single word & quickly refer to it & help spread it.

Workers of the World, Take PTO! (article)

The Soviet Union gave people vacations… and then dictated where and with whom those vacations must take place.

First clean water, now clean air (article)

Comparing our air today to the water systems of the 1700s & 1800s is a great idea! They took for granted that clean water was a good & achievable goal and would materially impact people’s lives.

I find myself taking for granted that our air doesn’t have to be much cleaner… but of course it can be cleaner & it would be extremely beneficial to everyone. And once it’s done, it’s something you look back and wonder how could it have ever been any other way?

Iranian Insider and British Spy: How a Double Life Ended on the Gallows

(article)

Sometimes you get rare glimpses into important parts of how the world works. Seeing important spies get arrested is one of them.

Bank Failures (data)
