What is known about a deadly crash outside a Texas migrant center?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
On Sunday an SUV hit a crowd of undocumented migrants waiting at a bus stop in Brownsville, Texas, killing eight and injuring 10. Brownsville is a border town and frequent point of crossing for undocumented migrants. The crash came days before Title 42, a pandemic-era authority that allowed expedited deportations, is set to expire, which many expect to bring a surge in illegal crossings.

Brownsville has one overnight shelter that has been at capacity for months, and its director said all of those hit had stayed in the shelter. Police say the driver, George Alvarez, attempted to flee but was restrained by bystanders.

Several migrants told media outlets that the driver was shouting anti-immigrant obscenities and accusing them of invading the country. One witness said that when Alvarez was restrained, he asked why so many migrants "were here, in his territory," prompting some to hit him before police arrived to arrest him. Police say they do not know if the crash was intentional and have been unable to verify witness reports.

Is House Speaker McCarthy right to tie federal spending cuts to raising the debt limit?

512 votes, 85 comments

Context: President Biden, House speaker face off over raising the debt ceiling.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - The only way to stop increasing the debt is to stop spending more than the government takes in taxes. While the debt limit is a poor policy overall in that it limits debt after it has been spent, this is the only current tool Congress has to put some brake on its profligacy, so should be used as such. A better law would be something like a balanced budget amendment, but given the incompetence and unwillingness of government to do what is right for the country, they need to work with the tools they have.
