How did the jury rule in the civil trial of former President Trump?

Source: Truth Social

  1. Summary
A jury in the civil trial of former President Donald Trump found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation against writer E. Jean Carroll. Carroll had accused Trump of raping her in 1996, and of defaming her by denying her allegation in late 2022. The jury did not find Trump liable for rape.

Trump could not be criminally prosecuted for rape because of the statute of limitations, but a unique and recent New York law allowed sexual abuse survivors to file civil lawsuits past the statute of limitations. Carroll's team brought two witnesses who testified that Carroll confided in them after the incident, as well as two other women who said they were groped by Trump. Trump did not appear for the trial.

The nine jurors had to consider if Carroll's claims were supported by the "preponderance of the evidence," a lower standard than in a criminal trial. The verdicts had to be unanimous. Trump attorney Joseph Tacopina said the verdict will be appealed, noting that an earlier decision made in a previous defamation case by Carroll was later overturned.

Should an airline have to give more than a refund if it causes a flight cancellation?

420 votes, 59 comments

Context: Biden admin rules would require airlines to compensate, not just refund, passengers over cancellations.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - A delayed flight will almost entail extra cost to the traveler for lodging, missed events, etc. The actual cost of missing a flight is almost always higher than the ticket price. Not to mention this would be a way to get airlines to focus on the business of air travel and away from their main profit-maker, selling points and acting as a bank. Too much of the economy in this country is focused less on the product or service they provide but how to exploit their customers.

No - No airline wants to cancel flights, and they won't if they actually controlled the circumstances that lead to cancellations. Airplanes are complicated and highly regulated machines, and there are so man...
