  1. Summary
The pandemic-era Title 42 border policy expired at 11:59 pm on May 11. The policy allowed undocumented migrants to be swiftly deported without the usual legal proceedings. US border officials have processed an average of 10,000 migrants per day for the last week, a record level. Advocates of Title 42 say its expiration will weaken border security, while critics say the expedited proceedings made repeat crossings much easier.

Hours before Title 42's expiration, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Biden administration's attempt to release some migrants in custody. Border Patrol had 25,000 migrants in custody on Thursday, and the number could reach 45,000 by the end of May. Border Patrol only has the capacity to hold a few thousand. The administration had argued the released migrants would be vetted and the overcrowding at facilities is dangerous.

New York City says it is taking in 1,000 migrants a day and that it expects the number to go up. Mayor Eric Adams plans to bus migrants to a neighboring county on the city's dime.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - This is one of the main jobs of the House! When people enter public service, they should be held to a higher standard. I was happy when they investigated Trump and Bush. I'm happy that they are investigating Biden. They need to add Clinton and Obama to their list. There should be a standing committee that is investigating current and former presidents and vice presidents to ensure their dealing are always above board.
