Why did an Idaho jury unanimously find Lori Vallow Daybell guilty of murder?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
A jury in Ada County, Idaho, unanimously found Lori Vallow Daybell guilty of murdering two of her children, seven-year-old JJ Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, and of conspiring to murder a romantic rival. The children were last seen alive in September 2019, and their bodies were discovered in June 2020 on property belonging to Chad Daybell, Lori's fifth husband.

Prosecutors said Lori and Chad killed those close to them and benefitted from the insurance and Social Security payments. The pair's unorthodox religious beliefs, including in zombies and an obsession with the apocalypse, were a prominent issue. Prosecutors showed texts in which the two weighed "death percentages" for Tammy Daybell, Chad's then-wife who was found dead a month before Lori and Chad married in late 2019.

Prosecutors called over 60 witnesses. The defense did not call any witnesses and instead tried to get the judge to rule that the prosecution presented insufficient evidence for a jury verdict. Lori is separately charged in Arizona with conspiring to murder her fourth husband.

Should the Supreme Court have blocked California's animal welfare law?

229 votes, 22 comments

Context: Supreme Court upholds CA law that could potentially impact nationwide pork industry.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - This seems like a sound states' rights issue, and I agree with the court's decision (i.e. the decision seems to be constitutionally sound) to leave the decision to the state. I also disagree with the farmers' assessment, if they disagree with the law they can choose not to service California. They could also raise animals specifically for California and raise those prices accordingly. [...] Also, to be 100% fair, 24 square feet is not a huge space. I am not an animal rights 'advocate' per say, but I do take issue with animal cruelty. 24 square feet is 6'x4' and that honestly doesn't sound unreasonable at all. I grew up on a (non-commercial) farm and even in the dead of winter when the pigs didn't get outside they had more space than that. Just saying.
