What has Special Counsel John Durham said of the FBI's Trump-Russia investigation?

  1. Summary
Special Counsel John Durham on Monday released the conclusions of his four-year investigation into the FBI's probe of ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Durham has previously been tasked with looking into the FBI's relationship with Boston mobsters and the CIA's destruction of tapes of harsh interrogations. He was assigned to the latest probe in 2019.

Durham's report was sharply critical of the FBI, finding the bureau relied on unconfirmed intelligence when it opened its probe. He noted the intelligence community did not have "any actual evidence of collusion" at the beginning of the investigation. He said that an objective assessment of the probe "should have caused the FBI [...] to reflect on whether the FBI was being manipulated for political or other purposes."

Some commentators said Durham's report had little new information. Over the four-year investigation, Durham brought three prosecutions and achieved only one conviction. The FBI argues it made dozens of corrective actions years ago that render many of the report's findings irrelevant.

Do you agree with the Manhattan DA's decision to charge Daniel Penny?

479 votes, 68 comments

Context: Daniel Penny, whose chokehold of Jordan Neely killed the latter on a subway, charged.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Based on witness testimony, this man was clearly acting like a threat to many people on the subway. Penny and two other men acted to subdue him... not to kill him. He was screaming that he wasn't afraid to die or go to jail. To me, that sounds like a man that is willing to hurt anyone to get what he wants, and defensive actions are warranted. If the situation were reversed and Penny was black and Neely was white, I don't think charges would have been brought in New York.
