This week, we explore changes from TikTok that matter for marketers and give our thoughts on what’s important, such as this update to the For You Page user experience


To align with the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), TikTok announced that users in the EU will soon have the option to switch off the platform’s recommendation algorithm. Those who opt out of the personalized For You Page and LIVE feed experiences will instead see “videos from both the places where they live and around the world” rather than content "based on their personal interests.” The change is expected to roll out by August 28, 2023.

Our Take: The implications for customers and consumers are clear, but the path forward for marketers and clients needs to be clarified. TikTok has said it will show popular content from the region the viewer is in or in their preferred language, so it's possible that local businesses will benefit from exposure in feeds that focus on regional content.

  • Facebook: Meta is notifying Group managers that it will replace inactive Admins in 6 days.
  • Threads: Users can now share posts to Instagram DMs, add custom alt-text to images or video, and tag others in a thread with a mention button.
  • TikTok: The platform is further enforcing its requirement that any “synthetic or manipulated media that shows realistic scenes” be clearly disclosed with a “sticker or caption, such as ‘synthetic’, ‘fake’, ‘not real’, or ‘altered’.”
  • YouTube: A number of changes, including the deactivation of links in Shorts descriptions and comments, were announced.
