Trevor McKendrick - I'm back

Hi everyone,

I’m back. Excuse the absence, it won’t happen again.

Patrick McKenzie does a typical deep dive on the Binance regulatory action (article)

The biggest surprise to me reading this was that Patrick believes Binance/CZ’s downside is not capped. Excluding the forthcoming SEC action, I assumed this news now meant Binance/CZ now know the absolute worst that will happen. Patrick thinks otherwise.

David Beckham documentary (netflix)

Almost as good as The Last Dance, which is saying something. I knew very little about David and I breezed through this.

Fun fact: it’s directed by Fisher Stevens, who played Huge (the PR guy) in Succession. Read an interview with Fisher on the Beckham documentary here.

My friend Jowanza got hit by a car while biking (article)

“I went through the intersection, and I saw a headlight approaching rapidly. All I could do was mutter, "No, no.”

He survived and is recovering fine, albeit more slowly than he’d like.

The link is his write up on what happened, and how he feels about it.

1 hour YouTube intro to LLMs (youtube)

By Andrej Karpathy, of OpenAI & Tesla fame.

I watched the whole thing, it’s excellent. I was less interested in the security sections at the end so you could comfortably stop at the 45 minute mark.

Peter Thiel interview w/ Blake Masters (PDF)

Apparently this was on Tim Ferriss’ podcast, and the date is unclear. I think it was in 2018 at the latest. I hadn’t seen it before and honestly don’t remember how I stumbled upon it.

Really short, solid read.

Taylor Swift on her relationship with the paparazzi in 2014 (youtube short)

She likes the New York paparazzi the best.

What the hell happened to Effective Altruism? (article)

I’ve been an EA lurker for a long time. Never went to any meetups or wrote anything from an EA POV, but the idea of empirically researching & studying the most efficient & effective ways of using your time & money to improve the world always made sense to me.

In fact it feels so obvious it’s hard to realize just how low the bar was before EA came around (and to be clear, the bar is still stupidly and sadly low, but at least EA brought a better POV one could adopt).

I hadn’t realized that EA had shifted so dramatically to preventing the death of humanity from AGI. I knew they talked about it quite a bit, but I had no idea it had become the new thing. I also didn’t realize the movement had been overtaken by a bunch of democrat normies.

Bookmarked: find people’s book recommendation (website)

I stumbled upon this looking for Paul Graham’s book recommendations. I love this because 1) good, unique book recommendations are always hard to find, and 2) the site cites where the person recommended the book.

New Zealand family records their first trip to Walmart (youtube)

“We need a cart immediately”

ChatGPT please create a video showing an emotional demonstration of consumer surplus.

Elon Musk's story about a seal with headphones for SpaceX launch (twitter video, 2 minutes)

The government made SpaceX catch a seal, put headphones on it, and play sonic boom sounds to it to test whether their launches were hurting seals.

A real story, tho it sounds like it’s from Atlas Shrugged.

Mumford & Sons playing The Cave in Austin in 2009 (twitter video)

There’s only 20 or so people there. Before they were famous.

Think about how much work it took to get to that still-low-status and unimpressive point.

How much of success is mental fortitude? How much is just in your mind?

“be comfortable saying no to things. not an easy thing to do, but sooner you learn to do it, the better you will get at doing the things you want to do.”

Shoutout to people who writes books with microscopic market sizes as acts of love.
