I recently received an email from Google informing me that soon enough they will be getting rid of the free GMB websites they offered many businesses and will be redirecting them back to the GMB profile. Now that may not sound like a big deal until you realize that hundreds if not thousands of people have been using those sites as their primary reference to help land calls, spread information about their business, or even just to have up there as somewhat of a business card and now Google is going to be dropping them. As an SEO and website design specialist I've always urged people to move away from those sites as they aren't the greatest looking or conducive to a positive SEO strategy but I almost feel for many of these business owners as not everyone has the budget to afford a nice website and up until recently Google sites were the way out of that for many business owners. I'm not sure how many of you feel about this whole situation but Google seems to be making it harder and harder to love them every day and I hope that those of you who did use these sites in the above-mentioned ways find a home for your new websites if you choose to build a new one.
The title says it all. Any bad or toxic advice that kept you from growing as a marketer? What advice would you give to young/new marketers instead? Here are some examples of bad/misleading advice I've heard before: "More content is always better." "SEO isn't that important; just write for people." "Stick to a formal tone to be taken seriously." "You need to be on every social media platform." "Viral content is the ultimate goal." "Traditional marketing is dead." "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." And, I'm sure you've all heard of this before: "You can target everyone."
