PushPress: From CrossFit Passion to 8-Figure SaaS

Dan Uyemura is the co-founder and CEO of PushPress, a gym management software platform for boutique gym owners.

In 2009, Dan was working as a developer at Myspace while also falling in love with CrossFit as a personal hobby. His passion for fitness led him to open his own gym, despite having no prior experience in the industry.

As a gym owner, Dan found the existing software pretty lacking. Figuring he could do better, he recruited two friends - a developer and a designer - to build their own gym management system from scratch.

Building the software proved tougher than expected.

For years, the founders struggled to get traction. They hit major tech issues, often scrapping entire versions of their software. Growth was a painfully slow - it took almost 5 years to hit $1 million ARR.

Behind the scenes, Dan was battling personal demons.

He was struggling with drug addiction - which made the startup journey even tougher, putting both his personal life and business at risk.

By 2017, Dan almost quit PushPress and go back to running his gym.

But in a last-ditch effort, he invested in an accelerator program. This decision proved to be a turning point and gave the founders new insights.

Today, PushPress generates 8-figures in ARR, serves over 3,500 gyms, with a team of 100 people. They've raised $11 million in funding.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • How Dan and his co-founders persevered through five years of slow growth before reaching their first million in ARR

  • Why PushPress decided to pivot from relying on third-party integrations to building their own full-stack solution

  • How a competitor's acquisition of their partner company forced PushPress to rapidly develop crucial features

  • Why PushPress chose to focus on customer retention and organic growth rather than pursuing aggressive paid acquisition

  • How Dan balances running the business based on instinct with the need for more data-driven decision making as the company scales

I hope you enjoy it.

5 Keys to Scaling Your SaaS to $1 Million ARR

Are you trying to scale your SaaS to 7 figures?

Your $100K playbook won't cut it anymore:

If you want to grow your scrappy SaaS from $100k to $1 million ARR, what got you here won't get you there.

You need to level up. Now.

After interviewing 400+ SaaS founders, here's a roadmap breakdown for hitting 7-figures without burning cash:

1. Crank Up Customer Acquisition:
• Go all-in with content: Be the go-to source in your niche
• Build in public: Document and share your startup journey
• Harness word-of-mouth: Turn customers into advocates

2. Optimize Revenue:
• Value-based pricing: Price based on customer outcomes
• Expand customer value: Implement strategic upsells
• Create a "whale" tier: Premium features for power users

3. Retention Is King:
• Nail onboarding: Ensure quick value for new users
• Proactive success: Address needs before issues arise
• Build community: Foster connections among user base

4. Product-Led Growth:
• Self-serve model: Let your product sell itself
• Focus on north star: Improve core value continuously
• Seamless integrations: Fit into users' existing workflow

5. Operational Excellence:
• Automate processes: Free up time for strategic growth
• Data-driven decisions: Base strategies on user behavior
• Scalable systems: Design processes that grow with you

Remember this:

Hitting 7-figures is about outsmarting, not outspending.

Focus on these fundamentals.
They're the building blocks of long-term success.

Now get to work. Your future self will thank you.
