Inside Intercom - Our approach to remote onboarding

Hey there,

Starting a new job can be an exciting yet daunting experience, particularly during a pandemic. Along with many other companies, in March of last year, we had to reinvent our onboarding program to a virtual experience practically overnight.

This uncertain territory was challenging for our team and our new hires. But we’ve learned a lot since then by collecting feedback and reviewing engagement scores from those initial onboarding groups. This has helped us identify the areas where our new colleagues may need increased support to understand how we work and the nuances of our culture.

We’ve continued to refine our onboarding experience so our new hires get the best possible start to their career at Intercom. What was once a two-day in-person program is now a six-month virtual journey.

As we transition to a new hybrid way of working, we’ll continue to iterate on how we provide a welcoming onboarding experience for new hires. As Anisha Agarwal, our People Development Program Manager, explains, “we’ll take all these learnings and continue to challenge ourselves to provide the best experience.”
