Five Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 136th edition of Find That Pod.

Business on the old Interwebs can be quite cut-throat at times, but I'm happy to report that amongst the people writing about podcasts, particularly in newsletter form, there appears to be a friendly camaraderie forming, which is very nice to see.

And while that's a little bit too much inside baseball to share, I did want to tell you about one such group of friends we've made:

Podyssey is an online community of podcast fans (kinda like ours). Subscribe to Podyssey’s weekly newsletter to receive the best podcast recommendations and playlists from podcast superfans like yourself! Sign up here.

Ok now on to this week's podcasts...

Snoozecast

For years now, I've fallen asleep listening to podcasts. And while the morning routine to hunt for the Airpod that fell out of my ear at night can be a tad annoying, the gentle and soothing tones of voices in my ear have allowed me to fall asleep faster and get a better night's sleep. It's made a huge difference in the quality of my sleep. So I was quite pleased when this podcast came across my field of view.

Snoozecast is a show dedicated entirely to helping you fall asleep. The show features two hosts taking turns reading a variety of classical stories in quiet and calming tones. From Pride and Prejudice to the Secret Garden, and hundreds of other stories, the reading style and soothing voices are truly conducive to falling asleep faster. With tons of episodes to get into, and three new shows a week, you'll likely never run out of material to guide you gently to sleep.

Ask & Tell

Taboo questions about s*x, dating and romance, like the topic of money, are too often relegated to whispers and private conversation. So it's always nice to find a podcast that's not afraid to take these topics head-on. Featuring two friends, B & J (yes that's clever), this relatively new show features lively discussions with diverse guests to talk about topics as wide-ranging as female pleasure, love, passion, therapy, being a unicorn, and more! Give it a listen, this show may be new, but has plenty of potential to develop into something special.

Another Mother Runner

Are you a mother? Are you a runner? I can't say I'm either one of those, though I used to be a runner before a tragic garden gnome incident occurred. Host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of 14 marathons, is joined by a rotating cast of co-hosts to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to finding your athletic happy place, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, they talk about it all. A great show for anyone into punishing their body, but you know, running!

MUSIC

The Metallica Podcast

Remember CDs? Like, Compact Discs? For those of you too young to remember, they were these thin small discs of plastic you'd stick into a CD player and music would come out. I remember them well. And I also recall with great clarity the first two CDs I ever bought: Gun's & Roses: Appetite for Destruction, and Metallica's Master of Puppets. And while my music tastes have evolved, Metallica, especially their early music has remained a favourite.

Now comes along an official podcast from the band itself. It's a fantastic oral history of the early years of the band's formation as well as the recording of what is widely considered to be their best collection of songs: The Black Album. The show features all the band members including Lars, James, Kirk and Robert Trujillo. Some truly great stories are retold, including Metallica's experience with playing in Commnist Russia in front of millions of fans.

Future Hindsight

Put on your thinking caps. Future Hindsight is a weekly podcast that takes big ideas about civic life and democracy and turns them into action items for everyday people. Host Mila Atmos shares in-depth conversations with citizen changemakers, helping listeners realize the power they have to make real change. Sounds pretty informative right? I told you to put on your thinking caps. I know there's a lot of doom and gloom going around, but change starts with small acts of local change, so you know, you might as well get started.
