The Analogy:

In my opinion, the best way of explaining how the TikTok algorithm works is basically thinking of it as America's Got Talent but the entire audience being the judges.

If the majority of the audience approves of your "talent", then you are sent to the next (and usually larger) audience group who decides your next fate and so on.

How this relates:

Whenever you post a video on TikTok, the algorithm automatically sends your video to a certain amount of random users' "for you" pages, regardless of whether you have followers or not.

If the majority of those random users engage with your video via a like, share, comment and/or high % watch time, then your video moves onto another (and usually larger) group who decides your next fate. *cough cough, exactly like AGT*

Videos that continue to pass the different groups with strong engagement will go viral and ones that do the opposite will flop and stop getting sent to more "for you" pages.

Posting on TikTok is like performing on America's Got Talent except with the audience being the judges:

Random TikTok users = Audience

"For you" page = The stage

Each video you post = A new contestant

Like, share, comment or high % watch time = Voting

Conclusion:

Thinking of the TikTok algorithm as a AGT-like talent show is very powerful way to wrap your head around what is going on every time you release a video.

Tie this in with having "viewer empathy" and you will likely begin looking a every post wildly different.
