Five Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 143rd edition of Find That Pod.

Here we are. The final day of 2021. And for most of us, it's been another bewildering year. As you can imagine, I've listened to a lot of podcasts this year, and out of all the ones I've had the pleasure of discovering in 2021 here are my top 10, in no particular order.

1) Brains
2) Futures Podcast
3) Valley Heat
4) Cerebro
5) Timesuck
6) Thinking is Cool
7) Renegades: Born in the USA
8) The Apology Line
9) Conversations with Coleman
10) Maintenance Phase

Hope you all are staying safe and I wish you all a Happy New Year. I'm extremely grateful for each and every one of you that's decided to trust me with your ongoing, curated, podcast recommendations. Here are this week's recommendations:

Review That Review

I have seen this premise in a few places, and it even appears in another podcast I reviewed this year, but this is the first show I've seen that's dedicated entirely to making fun of other people's online reviews. It's a weekly comedy podcast wherein the hosts take on some of the best and worst of Internet Karens (sorry Karens), taking to their keyboards and either slavishly praising their favourite product, service or place to eat or ripping it a new one. It always amazes me that people take so much time and effort to leave some of these truly insane reviews. In any case, if you want a good laugh, this definitely a great podcast to check out.

The Internet Says It's True

I've noticed a trend in the last year or so. Many more comedians and entertainers of all stripes are taking to starting their own podcasts, but where some of them are doing plain old interview shows, many of them are starting shows far more interesting. They're doing podcasts with unique angles on storytelling that use their unique skills as entertainers to bring to life lesser-known stories and interesting phenomenon. That's a pretty good description of this show hosted by Michael Kent, a professional comedian and magician. The Internet Says is True follows the formula of asking its listeners to tell him something strange, bizarre or surprising, and Michael does his best to chase down the real truth of the story. Entertaining, engaging and simply loads of fun is what you should expect from this terrific podcast whose topics are always interesting and wide-ranging.

SCIENCE

Mysterious Universe

The strangest things in the universe, as far as we know it at least are explored by hosts Aaron Wright and Benjamin Grundy in this show that runs an extremely wide gamut of topics. What do these chaps talk about? Futurology, weird science, consciousness, alternative history, cryptozoology, UFO's and all manner of new-age absurdity. Give it a listen if these kinds of topics resonate with your curious mind.

The Lazy Genius

Sometimes it's hard to find practical advice about everyday living. Everything from how to organize your books to navigating siblings who fight, or planning a summer day. Sure, these things may seem trivial and small, but even a small amount of planning and thinking about seemingly mundane events and tasks can help put your mind at ease and allow you to focus on the things that matter. And that's exactly what this podcast is about. It's plenty of practical and useful advice about the things that matter and a nudge towards simply being lazy and not caring about those things that truly don't matter.

BUSINESS

Influencer Business

Everyone's an influencer these days, right? While I'm not particularly fond of that moniker, there's no question that there has been a massive explosion in the number of people working their own side hustles, particularly as COVID-19 took hold. So of course there's bound to be podcasts dedicated to the art and craft of building an Internet audience and becoming an influencer. If you want to get an up-close and personal look at the influencer industry and the people and brands behind it, this is the right show for you.
