Five Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 140th edition of Find That Pod.

As always, welcome new subscribers!

Before we get into this week's podcasts, I have two things to ask of you. After all 'tis the season for giving right?

---

1. I need help spreading the word about this little community we've got going on here. I absolutely love to talk about podcasts every week and provide you with recommendations and I am eternally grateful that this newsletter has found an audience.

But the more people we can get to join our community, the more time I can dedicate to this project and continue bringing you the recommendations you've come to expect, and probably a lot more.

So whether you've got an audience you can share the newsletter with or just tell a pal or two, it would mean a lot to me.

2. If you like what I do here. consider supporting me on Patreon, you can do so for as little as $3 / month. I mean what's $3 / month?

Given our absolutely insane levels of continuing inflation, $3 / month is like 3 cents a month am I right?

---

And one final thing, before I go, I have to share with you one of the funniest things I've read on the Internet in quite some time. A writer named Geraldine DeRuiter recently went to a Michelin Starred restaurant with her husband and friends in Italy, and well, the story is a saga so bonkers, that it's perhaps only eclipsed by the utterly insane response from the restaurant's chef.

After all, what IS a man on a horse?

Ok, enough rambling, here are this week's recommendations:

Unsung History

I absolutely love these kinds of history podcasts. They are the ones that seek to uncover the lesser-known stories that are as equally fascinating as the ones we all learn about in school and countless Ken Burns documentaries. Unsung History takes a deep dive on the lives of women, people of color, immigrants, laborers, religious minorities, enslaved people, and Indigenous communities through the course of American History.

Each episode focuses on a singular event, person or period of time and follows a tried-and-true formula of presenting the topic with a narrative storytelling introduction, often followed by an interview with an expert on the topic at hand.

A great show for American history nerds to explore!

Armchair Adventures

This is a podcast for kids. Ok, good, we got that out of the way. Produced by a British not-for-profit theatre company, Armchair Adventures is a fun, interactive podcast designed for kids to join Connie, a teenager and her plucky team of explorers as they visit magical places and meet extraordinary people. It's a highly spirited show that's probably appropriate for kids about 6-10 years old if I had to guess. The production value is great and it's definitely a show you should check out if you're looking for kid-appropriate content for the curious adventurers in your home.

Six Pixels of Separation

Business. Marketing. Technology. Somewhere at the intersection of these topics is the long-running Six Pixels of Separation podcast hosted by Mitch Joel, a veteran of the digital marketing world. Now a writer and investor, Mitch often brings on a roster of all-star guests to discuss a wide variety of topics related to today's digital landscape. If you fall in love with this show as I have, clear out your schedule, this podcast has over 800 episodes in its back-catalogue to get through.

One Click

Can one click on the Internet change your life? That's the premise of this podcast whose first season is narrated by actress Elle Fanning. The limited series season one features the story of DNP, an explosive chemical originally used in WWI-era munition factories, but somehow, almost inexplicably, is now being sold on the web as a diet pill, leaving many people dead in its wake. Journalist Jessica Wapner and Elle Fanning take you on a journey of how one goddamned click can ruin your life, or even worse, end it.

TV & FILM

Filmspotting

I'm always on the lookout for great Film and TV podcasts because frankly, I'm a cinephile and also a bit of a pop-culture sucker. I'm one of those people that used to obsessively go to Boxofficemojo website and see how my favourite movies were doing at the box office. So it's a great day when I come across a podcast focused on film reviews that I can relate to and whose hosts seem to have a similar taste in movies to mine. Check it out.
