6 Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 145th edition of Find That Pod.

Happy Friday fellow humans. No time to waste today so we'll get straight to the recommendations this week.

Oh, and in case you didn't notice. I've been getting a lot of feedback on the # of podcasts being featured in each edition of the newsletter, so as of today's issues we're switching from 5 to 6 and we'll see how that goes in the coming weeks.

Keep the feedback coming, I want to know what you think would make the newsletter better and more useful.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Verbal Diorama

If you have a particular love of the movie-making process and want to get an inside look at how the sausage is made so-to-speak, the Verbal Diorama podcast might be a good fit for you. Do you ever wonder how a film went from conception to completion? That's the basic premise of this show in which host Emma McGowen scours the history of how a particularly beloved, or loathed movie got made. Verbal Diorama is the podcast all about the history and legacy of movies you know, and movies you don't.

Each episode examines the making of a single movie and with over 130 episodes, you can dig into the archives of movies such as Thor: Ragnarok, Alien vs Predator, GoldenEye, The Addams Family, Aliens, X-Men 2, Jaws, Deadpool, and many more.

The Internet Says It's True

I love it when advertisers come back. It means that they enjoyed the bump in listeners the newsletter got them. So I'm happy to tell you about this awesome podcast again.

I’ve noticed a trend in the last year or so. Many more comedians and entertainers of all stripes are taking to starting their own podcasts, but where some of them are doing plain old interview shows, many of them are starting shows far more interesting. They’re doing podcasts with unique angles on storytelling that use their unique skills as entertainers to bring to life lesser-known stories and interesting phenomenon.

That’s a pretty good description of this show hosted by Michael Kent, a professional comedian and magician. The Internet Says is True follows the formula of asking its listeners to tell him something strange, bizarre or surprising, and Michael does his best to chase down the real truth of the story. Entertaining, engaging and simply loads of fun is what you should expect from this terrific podcast whose topics are always interesting and wide-ranging.

TV & FILM

The TNG Podcast

One of my earliest memories was someone plopping me in front of a giant white-framed tube TV in an apartment building somewhere in West Germany. I remember watching Chernobyl happening on TV. I remember watching the Challenger shuttle explode. But I also definitely remember watching an episode of the original Star Trek with Kirk and Spock down on a planet with some scary aliens. I say scary because I was 5 years old and it was a little much for me at the time. Thankfully that didn't scare me enough to stay away from Star Trek altogether, and my next sci-fi love would be Star Trek: The Next Generation which I wouldn't discover until landing in Canada.

To say I'm a TNG fan would be a gross understatement, and there's no question that there is no shortage of TNG rewatch podcasts out there, but the TNG Podcast stands a notch above most if not all of them. Join TNG superfans Shereese & Andrea as they do an episode-by-episode teardown of all seven seasons of one of the most beloved Sci-Fi shows of all time.

Barron's Streetwise

I'm now at the age where I am forced to pay attention to things like the markets and investing, and all that crap. Trust me, I would rather not, but with things like semi-out-of-control inflation intent on shrinking our money stores, being aware of what's happening in the world of finance has become somewhat of a necessity for many people, including me.

But let's face it, many of these topics can be boring as sin, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the tenor, presentation and overall rhythm of this podcast, dedicated entirely to getting the lowdown on high finance is rather excellent. This is one of those shows where the production value, combined with the style and cadence of the host, Jack Hough, is entirely what makes the show what it is. Its tagline of 'Business leaders and trendspotters, insights and absurdities—this is Wall Street like you've never heard before'. is quite on the money if you pardon the pun.

SOCIETY & CULTURE

Storytime with Seth Rogen

Permit me the cardinal sin of being late to this particular bandwagon, but holy shit is this an amazing show. And I suppose I shouldn't be surprised given the fact that an A-lister like Seth Rogen is involved. The idea is dead simple. Love him or hate him, Rogen takes a decidedly different approach to the comedian-led celebrity podcast. This show is all about telling a fascinating story. Seth is out to tell the most interesting stories he's ever heard of, with the help of a few friends of course.

From a near-death grizzly bear fight in remote Canada to a life-altering celebrity encounter in a movie theatre to the revelation of a family secret, Storytime starts with Seth’s curiosity about people and the world, and always ends up in an unexpected place.
