2021 was a crazy year for venture capital, topping 1,000 unicorns and an IPO-a-day.

But how did that translate into returns?

Very well for top Limited Partners (“LPs”), the folks that invest in VC funds, and give them the capital to invest in startups.  Very well, indeed.

Wesleyan University has a relatively small endowment but it published a terrific report on how they and others did.  And 2021 was a year like they’d never seen.

There’s isn’t that much “liquidity” for startup shares, but there’s more than there used to be.

There are 2 basic ways for angel investors to sell their shares before an IPO or a sales (a so-called liquidity event):

• When the startup is oversubscribed in a subsequent venture round.
• When the startup gets very mature, a secondary market can start to exist on its own.

Salesforce likes to talk about “Customers for Life”, and while that’s sort of catchy, it’s a little hard to grok what it really means.

It finally sunk in for me a bit the other day.  At Adobe Sign, there’s a large group of well-known customers that I closed, Back in The Day … that now have been customers for 10 years.  Some even now for almost 15 years! Whoa.

I’ve learned a lot seeing case studies go up over the years of customers I closed … that 10 years on … are still customers.
