Strategies to increase traffic

Tyler Scionti sees many folks start out blogging a bit here and there. They end up spending a fair amount of time and money, but don’t really get anywhere.

It’s because they don’t have a clear strategy and plan. Strategy is a set of intentional decisions that you make to reach a goal. That’s it. Blogging or backlinks are great as tactics, but they are not a strategy in themselves.

I like to break strategy down into four key decisions. This is the same framework that I use when I teach, and it’s led to 1000% increases in traffic from Google. Here are the decisions that you need to make:

1. What is your goal?

Beyond just wanting more traffic, this goal should include how much you want to increase traffic by, and in what timeframe. Furthermore, what do you want that traffic to do on your website? In marketing, we call these SMART goals. This means that they are: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time-bound. Good goals help you stay accountable and keep you on track.

2. Who are you going after, and what are they asking online?

Google search results are an intersection of two things:

• Who is doing the searching.
• What they are searching for.

The better you can understand your ideal customer profile and the questions they ask online, the more targeted your content will be. I start with a buyer persona, then use a mix of Quora, Reddit, and keyword research tools to understand how the questions change throughout the buyer’s journey. This sets you up for content that will support your ideal customer throughout the funnel.

3. What unique content resource are you going to create for your ideal customer profile?

Once you have all the questions mapped out, you’ll likely spot trends and be able to identify content opportunities. These includes blog posts, landing pages, articles, or other resources that you can create to serve your customer better than your competitors do. Think about your website as a product, and get creative!

4. How are you going to measure the effectiveness?

Google Analytics and Google Search Console will give you most of the information that you need to track how your content appears in search results, how much traffic you are generating, and what that traffic is doing on your website to build your business.

With these four key decisions, you’re well on your way to an SEO and content strategy that is intentional and targeted. This will give you a huge advantage over your competition, especially if they are only writing a few blog posts here and there.

I would also continue to hammer down on where your audience lives online. Chances are good that they are using Google to answer their questions, but they could also be on Reddit, Discord, Twitter, etc.
