360Learning - First impressions matter

Whether we’re talking about a job interview, meeting the in-laws, or the first day of school, we all know that first impressions matter. But what about “last impressions”? Turns out, they matter quite a lot, too.

According to a cognitive bias known as the peak-end rule, the final moments of an experience (along with the most intense bits) are highly influential in how we remember the whole thing. For instance, we might spend many months or years engaged in our workplace, perhaps acting as in-house learning champions, taking advantage of every opportunity to grow. When HR teams send out engagement surveys, we check off that we’re happy and thriving.

But if something changes and we end up leaving the organization on a sour note—even if the negative experience only lasts a few days or even a few hours—there’s a good chance that will negatively impact how we remember our entire time at this company. This is why good, thoughtful offboarding programs are so crucial. You don’t want to ruin a perfectly good experience, just because the very end was less than ideal.

We dive into all this and more in our latest articles, and don't forget to join us on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter!

Why Employee Offboarding Matters Now More Than Ever

How you say goodbye to an employee who's leaving your company is just as important as how you welcome them to their new job. Yet, for many companies, employee offboarding gets less attention than onboarding. In fact, "71% of organizations have no formal offboarding process." We’ll show you why this is such a mistake, and help you fix it if your offboarding program has gone off the radar.

L&D Holds the Key to Knowledge Retention During the Great Resignation

When it comes to the Great Resignation, very few companies are acknowledging the valuable institutional knowledge that departing employees are taking with them. This loss of expertise impedes collaboration, slows productivity, and creates a gap that’s much more difficult to fill than the number of open positions. The effects are especially debilitating if the lost knowledge took years to learn and cultivate. To improve knowledge retention, L&D must create a strong organizational culture that encourages knowledge sharing.
