In the 1990s, Shigetaka Kurita, a designer at Japan’s main mobile carrier, kicked off one of the most innovative language developments we’ve ever seen: the emoji. Things quickly escalated from his simple, heart-shaped pictogram, and today many of us choose from an extensive emoji library every time we send a message.

The same hasn’t been true for businesses – until recently, many have resisted the emoji takeover, considering them unprofessional and inappropriate. That attitude is changing rapidly as businesses realize the role emojis can play in making customer communications feel richer and more engaging.
