Managers and Productivity in Retail (article)

Quality management matters! High energy matters! Being good matters!

How to talk on Zoom (article)

If you want to come across… better… on Zoom, be more intense.

More intense if you’re a woman, happier if you’re a man.

Them’s the data!

In the Court of Chancery of the State of Delaware (pdf)

The court’s opinion on why Square buying Tidal was a bad business decision but NOT a sign of the board members acting in bad faith.

The opinion (which I read in its entirety but the link I had no longer works and I can’t find another copy online) compares to 2 previous court decisions to contrast good faith (Uber buying Anthony Levandowski’s company) and bad faith (Michael Eisner hiring Michael Ovitz for way too much money)

The Last Dance (netflix)

I consider this one of the Covid classics – it took me a few months to get thru again but it was just as good as the first time.

It gives a small but real peak into the sacrifices required to be the best. It sure seems like to me that the best people can sometimes be bullies or assholes. Is that a requirement? What do you think? If that’s changed I think it’s because mean people are viewed much more negatively today.

The music is also fantastic, but there’s no publicly available soundtrack(!) – I had to search to find this bootleg youtube copy of the song from the final episode’s credits (which is fantastic and what I’m writing this to right now).

Success and the imaginary rules you live by (article)

Dr. Gurner is quickly becoming one of my favorite newsletter writers – she removes my fear of action.

This particular article is about all the fake rules that successful people ignore that everyone else feels beholden to.

Here’s the 5 she mentions:

  • Rule #1: Permission is Not Required
  • Rule #2: Common Process is Not Essential.
  • Rule #3: Speed Over Caution
  • Rule #4: Social Approval is Not Important
  • Rule #5: Expectation is Not Calibrated

The whole thing is worth reading, and I’d recommend paying the $10 a month to get access to everything.
