I've been working as a marketing manager for 9 years and I absolutely hate my job. I was an art student and landed in marketing because of my graphic design chops. I can't stand it anymore. It feels like I'm drowning in a capitalistic nightmare cesspool every day I come to work. I dont think people should buy more junk and I'm tired of supporting that. I hate working alongside sleezy sales people. I hate stressing about budgets. I just fundamentally feel like the work I'm doing is just generating noise in the world, not anything meaningful or positive. If I didn't have a mortgage and kids, I'd probably just up and quit and find my way, but I keep resisting that temptation daily. Has anyone left marketing for a new career? What did you do, and was it a good move? How did you do it?
I've been working in this field for just over 5 years now, and I'm starting to feel...a little burned out. I work primarily in digital marketing, so the industry, trends and the way we work constantly changes. While I appreciate and value professional development in this career, this consistent push to grow our skills and learn something new is exhausting. I think we can agree that a lot of marketing positions are undervalued even though your skills sets are endless as a writer, graphic designer, web designer and social media manager, but the consistent need to grow makes me feel like I'm falling behind if I'm not an expert in that new skill within a month and that puts my job at risk. Working in social media in general, it's part of our job to be chronically online, curate content, and absorb content and information - we wouldn't be able to do our jobs without it. But on a personal level, we all know how draining it can be to absorbing content like this on a daily basis and its impact on our mental health. Maybe I'm starting to realize this isn't the industry for me, but do my fellow marketers ever feel this way?
Hey, this is a reminder to look back and take a moment to realise how hard you worked Regardless of what's working and what's not, you have worked hard and I am so proud of you It's easy to lose track of all the countless hours you spent on this when all you see is hustle ahead but take a deep breath and be proud of yourself Know that you are so worthy of all the love and goodness in this world regardless of what you did or what you are doing But what you are doing also makes this world a better place, thank you for existing 💙
