Then on top of that your work hours and work life balance is terrible from the very beginning. And then gets worse as you move up. Why do people still flood into marketing careers trying to get these jobs? Versus software engineering or engineers, they actually get a living wage their first year, get paid six figures after a year or two, or even in their first year? And when they do peak, it's a lot of money.
I (32f) was recently chatting with a friend and I told him I wanted to transition from graphic design to marketing. His current job title is VP of Marketing, previously he was a CMO. He mentioned that some marketing jobs are on the decline due to AI, like copy writing and BDR/outreach so I may want to avoid those routes. It got me wondering: which marketing roles do you all think are the most sustainable longterm? The reason I'd like to leave design behind is that the industry can be very ageist. At a certain point your work experience may actually become a hindrance because older designers are *generally!* seen as less creative, less flexible, having less relevant software proficiencies etc. (google "ageism in graphic design if you're interested.) The reason I bring this up is because I wonder if there are certain areas of marketing (perhaps social media for example) suffering from the same issue. I don't agree with the stereotypes about older workers btw, I'm just trying to explain my reasoning for wanting a more stable career path. Thanks!!
