How to get on the front page of Hacker News
  1. High-value content. Create content that people will love and want to share
  2. A Simple and direct headline “How Stefan grew Friendly from zero to $1,000 MRR in 94 days”.
  3. Put the name and the direct URL, when submitting. Don’t use Bit.ly or any URL shortener.
  4. As soon as you post you will be in newest section of HackerNews. Send the link (http://news.ycombinator.com/newest) to at least 20 people from different locations that you know will upvote or submit it. Remember, asking everyone in the office to upvote your post will result in 1 upvote as they have the same IP address. Maybe you can crack it by asking them to use mobile internet for upvoting.
  5. Once you hit 5 or 6 upvotes, within the first five to ten minutes, you should get to the first or second page.
  6. Now you change the link (http://news.ycombinator.com/news) and send the frontpage to people when asking to upvote going forward. I would try to send it to another 10 people. All at different locations.
  7. At this point, you are 20-30 minutes in, and if you have written something interesting you will gain natural traction. If not, there is really nothing anyone can do for you.
How to separate tire-kickers from serious buyers

We've all heard to create a waitlist when we launch a product. IF you really want to separate the tire kickers from the serious customers, ask prospects to pay a small fee to jump ahead of the waitlist. Charge something small - $1 for example. You'll quickly find out who really wants the product vs people just kicking the tires (Marpipe did this at launch).

Use IFTTT tactic to get more premium users (Pricing page)

Converting from free tier to a paid plan is a difficult task especially when people have used your free plan for years. Same is the case for IFTTT. Here is the tactic IFTTT is using to sell more subscriptions / convert free users to paid plans:

"For a limited time, you may set your price for IFTTT Pro and we will honor it indefinitely. (minimum $1.99)" 

What is the catch here?

When you set a price like $2 and start paying. Then even you don't use it, you will still pay so that you don't lose this awesome deal.
