I recently put out a Twitter poll about podcasting and busking. In that poll I asked if podcasting was the new form of street performance, only this time the street is on the web. With Web3 and the blockchain, Podcasting 2.0 seems to have accelerated the act of podcasters asking their audience for voluntary donations to help support their shows.

Services like Patreon and Buy Me A Coffee are just two examples of places where podcasters send their audience to donate. With Web3 and Bitcoin, Podcasting 2.0 has another way to busk — Satoshis. These are small fractional pieces of Bitcoins that people, using the right Podcasting 2.0 podcast player, can stream or one-time send to their favorite podcasters as a way to show Value For Value.

The Podcast Index, spearheaded by former MTV VJ and OG podcaster Adam Curry, is aiming to make Podcasting 2.0 and sustainable podcasting a reality.

Another OG of podcasting Evo Terra, has talked extensively on his Podcast Pontifications podcasts about the Value For Value model.

So this brings me back to my initial question from that Twitter poll. Is podcasting the new busking? With a total of 8 votes, it was a 50/50 split.

If you're podcasting you want an audience and when you get that audience you want to show them value. So why shouldn't you "busk" and make something for all your hard work. (Note: I'm not throwing shade at all for those who podcast and don't want to monetize at all). *Note that the poll is pretty much a 50/50 split.

Web Finds Of The Week

  • Mark Schaefer is someone who I hold in very high regard. He's been nice enough to be on my podcasts and engages with my content online. Mark is a marketer, a teacher, an author, and a crypto-coin minter? Yea, with the Rally.io creator coins, people the likes of Mark, Brian Fanzo, Scott Monty and more are creating communities around "creator coins." It's an interesting concept and Mark breaks down his thoughts on it in his latest {grow} newsletter.
  • If you're not paying for a subscription to Platformer by Casey Newton you're missing a lot. Casey, formerly of The Verge, has a great newsletter that breaks down todays top tech stories and gives in depth analysis on many hard to digest topics. In his latest issue, Casey talks about how Google is starting to feel the heat from the United States Government that actually could "chip away at its dominance." Recently Google has been under fire for its dominance in the online advertising space and it's alleged "fixing" of auction bidders in it's popular Ad platforms. Casey's analysis is a must read.
  • This could be a mess for marketers and website owners around the globe. Yet another story taking aim at Google. This time it's Google Analytics. The reason why GA is in the crosshairs of EU regulators is it's hosting of user data in the United States where the government can spy on the traffic. So what is a website owner or marketer to do? The news is still being flushed out, but in the meantime keep this story on your radar. You can also check out an alternative analytics platform like Fathom (affiliate link) that isn't going to be illegal. I use Fathom in conjunction with GA and it's a great platform.
  • Staying that I'm a fan-boy of Rand Fishkin is an understatement. The guy is so giving with his time and his knowledge and his products, from Moz to now Sparktoro, are beyond amazing. In this article Rand talks about how episodic content promotes itself and drives traffic feeding the flywheel as it goes. He goes into, in depth, how to invest in this type of content properly and effectively.

Podcast Of Note

Another great marketing podcast that also happens to be on the Marketing Podcast Network is Ian Truscott's Rockstar CMO FM podcast. What I love about this show, besides the book recommendations, great interviews, and knowledge bombs, is how he has it structured. There are clear sections to the show. Ian has his regulars on and then has the interview section, and ends in the "pub" talking about a nice cocktail and some more marketing chatting. Give it a listen. You won't be disappointed.
