360Learning - The most underrated L&D skill
As L&D leaders, we’re constantly spinning plates. From authoring learning content to building eLearning programs and facilitating training for our teams, we’re doing it all. And with so much going on, there’s one critical skill set we often forget to develop—business acumen.
In any industry, having broad business acumen, or an understanding of key business issues, practices, and impacts, is highly beneficial. As L&D leaders, we need to be responsive and adaptable to the needs of our organizations.
We need to be able to translate strategy into learning programs, break those programs into engaging learning moments, and then prove that those learning moments are making a real difference. After all, aligning our goals with the wider business goals is the only way that we’ll get the seat at the table we deserve.
So, what can you start doing now to build your business acumen? Begin by looking at what’s happening around you. Read marketing and sales enablement content to better relate to your customers, take a look at financial statements, and start cultivating a mindset of curiosity. You can also look outside of your organization to get insights and inspiration, whether that be on social media or in L&D communities.
Speaking of insights and inspiration, why not join our L&D Collective or reach out to us on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter?
