Three Leadership Points - My First Million (Podcast)

Great summary of leadership from Shaan Puri:

“If you want to be a leader, three things are true:

The first is that you have a higher standard for yourself than anybody else has for you. So it doesn’t really matter what your job title is, but if you hold yourself to a higher standard than your manager holds you to, you are a leader.

Second is somebody who understands what the emotional state is, and what it needs to be, and can transfer it. So basically anybody that can understand that morale is low, it needs to be high. They can shift the mood, they can shift the energy. Or everybody’s a little too comfortable, we need to get a sense of urgency. They understand the emotional state and know how to shift it.

The third is they see things how they actually are. Not worse than they are, not better than they are, how they actually are. And then they paint a picture of how it’s going to be better than it currently is.” (Timestamp of quote 47:51-48:43)

Michael Jordan’s Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Speech (video)

The GOAT talking about the people who were important to him. Pairs very nicely w/ The Last Dance.

Nikola Tesla’s autobiography (online book)

I’ve only read a few pages but very interesting esp. from someone who “lost” to another great inventor in the area of public recognition.

Assimilating Women Into Male Institutions (article)

“Before the 1960s, important American institutions dominated by males did not accept women as equals. Most Ivy League universities did not admit women. Women did not have executive roles at major corporations. Women rarely were elected to Congress or appointed to Cabinet positions. In journalism, women were mostly relegated to topics related to food and fashion.”

Patrick Collison interview Sam Altman (youtube)

He opens with a great joke about having interviewed the wrong Sam for this same event last year (in this case, Sam Bankman-Fried)

Hank Green has cancer (youtube)

It’s Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

I’ve been a fan of vlogbrothers & Nerdfiteria for a long time & so this makes me sad. God speed to Hank.
