You’re a Content Marketer, Not a Writer

Ryan LawApr 29

Most content marketers have a “writer brain.” It’s the part of them that appreciates beautiful, clever writing. It’s instilled in them by years of reading fiction, writing essays, and aspiring to be a professional writer. The “writer brain” helps content marketers in the early part of their career, but, left …

The best marketing tips I've seen in the past 3 years

For the past 3 years, I’ve been collecting marketing tips for personal reference.

Here are the ones I come back to the most:

My top 5 learnings from spending 200k on Facebook Ads

  1. Always optimize for the intended result

Facebook knows who’s most likely to purchase from an ad, engage with an ad, click an ad, or simply do nothing. If you’re optimizing for link clicks, Facebook is great at finding the people who are most likely to click on your ad. However, …

The first 90 days of a launch should be focused on:

• refining messaging
• website conv. rate
• ad creative
• merchandising.

Look for clues in:

• paid-social ad comments
• DMs from social
• customer service inquiries/questions
• NPS

Focus on what the customer wants.

I love it when I ask someone a question and they say "it depends" because they realize that nuance and circumstances prevent what seems like universal advice being successfully copied and pasted into a strategy or plan.

At the end of the day, it depends.

How to calculate TAM for your startup:

Buy a $1,400 Gartner report on your industry.

Throw that report away. You won't need it.

Google image search the founders of the companies in your space.

If there aren't *a lot* of photos of them next to yachts, the TAM is too small.

When I started this job I would have said I was an 8 or 9 on a 1-10 scale w 10 being “I know ecomm operators inside and out”.

After talking to 2 dozen customers I’d rate myself a 4 or 5.

I don’t know what I don’t know. And that’s the greatest gift I can bring to this work.
