Office life is preparing to make a comeback

Hey there,

For all the extroverts in the world, the long-awaited return to the office feels tantalizingly close. For many of us, the pandemic and enforced working from home has revealed the extent to which office life is our natural habitat. Some of us even missed the daily commute.

And yet, it’s clearly not going to be the same as the office life we abruptly left behind in March 2020. How could it be – we didn’t fully realize it at the time, but we left that world behind, never to return.

There has been intense speculation about what the future of office life looks like, but safely reintroducing office work alongside the new work-from-home norms that have been established during the pandemic will give rise to all sorts of new opportunities.

At Intercom, we’re thinking deeply about what this hybrid work model will look like. As our SVP of People, Chris Tobin, explains, “The choices we make now will affect our long-term productivity, culture, employee experience, collaboration, and recruitment.”

The ultimate aim will be to make the best parts of both WFH and the office work for everyone, and also for the business. That shift is going to have all sorts of consequences we can’t fully predict right now, but for the moment, I’m just looking forward to seeing my colleagues in full 3D once again.
